It’s nearly Halloween and that means it’s time once again for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo! Come see the breathtaking display of thousands of artfully carved and illuminated pumpkins, October 5th through November 5th, 2017.
The annual Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo has to be seen to be believed. More than five thousand, intricately carved pumpkins, beautifully arranged and all in one place. It’s one of those rare attractions that excites both kids and adults. You won’t believe your eyes.
The pumpkins are displayed near the Zoo’s bison exhibit, along the Feinstein Junior Scholar Wetlands Trail. The display is so vast and fascinating, it takes an average of 45 minutes for most visitors wend their way through it. Upwards of 140,000 people come to see the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular every year.
You may be wondering how 5,000 jack-o-lanterns can be interesting. I mean, you’ve seen one jack-o-lantern, you’ve seen them all, right? You’ve obviously never seen the jack-o-lanterns at the Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular!
These jack-o-lanterns are much more than just leering faces. When you visit the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, you’ll travel back in time to dinosaurs and the last ice age. You’ll discover the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, and visit Europe during the Middle Ages. then it’s off to the New World and up to the industrial revolution. Cars, planes, space travel, computers and more – and all in intricately carved pumpkins! Artful backgrounds and music round out the show.
Of course, jack-o-lanterns age pretty quickly. Many of the pumpkins seen at the beginning of the display’s run have to be changed out well before it closes on November 5th. In fact the carvers expect to go through about 20,000 pumpkins during the course of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular’s 32-night run.
The pumpkins are hand-carved by Passion for Pumpkins, a professional multi-media company out of Oxford, MA. More than 5,000 of the jolly, orange fruits make up the display, all lit from within by LED lights. The eerie and beautiful amber glow illuminates the trail in perfect Halloween fashion.
Best of all, attendees to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular also have the option of taking a ride on the Soaring Eagle Zip Ride. The Soaring Eagle Zip Ride takes you 115 feet above the earth, giving you an all-encompassing view of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, Providence, and out into Narragansett Bay. All while safely and comfortably seated in side-by-side seats. Thrilling!
October 5th through the November 5th, 2017 – 6pm-10pm, trail closes at 11pm.
