Dive Into Rhode Island’s Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge 2018!

an invigorating dip into Narragansett Bay at Rhode Island’s Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge! Noon, January 1st, 2018 at Goddard Memorial State Park Beach.

There’s nothing quite as eye-opening as a splash in the cold waters of the Atlantic in January – and what a way to ring in 2018? Polar plunges are a popular way to celebrate the New Year, believe it or not, and Rhode Island has a number of them.

There’s the annual Prudence Island First Day Walk and Polar Plunge and the lesser known Annawamscutt Seal Society plunge held ever year at Annawamscutt Beach in Barrington, RI since 1984.

Last year we told you about the Newport Polar Bear Plunge. This event is held at Easton’s Beach (First Beach) and has been taking place since 1969. The Newport Polar Bear Plunge is notable because all proceeds from it go towards A Wish Come True, a group that grants wishes for children, ages 3 through 18, with life-threatening illnesses.

Another Rhode Island New Year’s Day plunge whose proceeds go towards a good cause is the Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge.

While the Frozen Clam Dip is a traditional polar plunge into Narragansett Bay. The Obstaplunge adds a half-mile “American Ninja Warrior” style obstacle course before the plunge. The “obsta” in Obstaplunge is short for “obstacles,” get it? Participants can choose to engage in the Frozen Clam Dip or go whole hog and run the Obstaplunge.

All participants will receive a long-sleeve, 2018 Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge t-shirt. You and your spectator friends are then invited to the after party with a DJ and some food trucks. Happy New Year!

The 7th annual Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge are hosted by Mentor Rhode Island and Laid-back Fitness. Proceeds go towards Mentor Rhode Island’s youth mentoring program.
