old fortress guarding the entrance to Narragansett Bay. It’s also home to the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and so much more!
Fort Adams State Park has long been known as a strategic defensive position from which to defend Narragansett Bay. The first fortifications were built here in the late 1700’s and more were added as threats and war technology advanced.
The park is better known for its music festivals, picnics, and gorgeous sunsets, these days. Fort Adams Bay Walk alone draws visitors and residents alike with its views of the House On The Rock, Newport Harbor and waterfront, Brenton Cove, three different lighthouses, and so much more.
Those interested in Fort Adams’ history will find plenty to do and see, as well.
Tour Fort Adams
Hour-long, guided tours will reveal the history, design, and even the restoration work that has gone into Fort Adams. You’ll explore everything from the top of the fort’s walls to the depths of it’s underground tunnels. Your tour will also shed light on what it was like to live here as a soldier or part of a soldier’s family.
If you’re here between July 4th weekend through Labor Day, be sure to check out the “Behind the Walls” Tour. This special tour opened to the public in 2016 and explores the “Lost” Fortress: Fort Adams Advanced Southern Redoubt. The Southern Redoubt is very impressive, rivaling Fort Sumter in size.
Visitors to Fort Adams State Park can also enjoy a self-guided tour of President Eisenhower’s Summer White House. Built in 1873 to house Fort Adams’ commanding officer, it gained more fame between 1958 and 1960 as The Eisenhower House.
No matter what draws you to Fort Adams State Park, you will not be disappointed!
