The summer months have come to an end but there are lots of exciting events on the schedule for Newport. The air has turned crisp, the leaves are changing colors, and the fun has just begun.
Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week – September 30 – October 3, 2021
Enjoy one of the most luxurious four-day events in the country. Car aficionados and soon-to-be enthusiasts can revel in observing memorable cars in a legendary setting. During the day, visitors can savor delicacies from fine dining pop-ups, see a collection of over a billion dollars’ worth in rare and vintage automobiles, attend seminars, play golf or tennis, or go sailing along the coast. When the sun goes down, the opulence goes up a notch with exclusive cocktail hours and dinners, VIP parties in mansions reminiscent of The Great Gatsby, and the annual gala. The event celebrates the history of motor racing in America that started in Newport when Willie K. Vanderbilt and his friends would drive their cars at top speed along Ocean Drive. Jay Leno, a known car lover, has frequented this event in past years. As event chairman, Mr. Leno will be on hand to present awards during the Concours d’Elegance on Sunday. If you want to dip your toes in the event without buying a ticket, watch the Tour d’Elegance which features participating cars as they drive from Scarborough Beach in Narragansett, through downtown Jamestown, along Ocean Drive, and ending on Bellevue Avenue. Don’t miss the chance to visit Newport as it becomes the center of history, luxury, and sport.
Newport Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival – October 16 & 17, 2021
Fort Adams State Park becomes the heart of popular food trucks, local and national craft beer, outdoor games, and music for one weekend in October. Where else can you munch on tacos, cheese, lobster, BBQ, kettle corn, and whoopie pies all while watching boats sail by in the harbor. Sample brews from over 15 vendors and food from more than 25 trucks. The family-friendly event features cornhole, giant Jenga, and giant checkers. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcomed and recommended as the perfect way to soak up the sun while listening to music. Then again, you might be the type to spend so much time dancing and shopping that you never sit down. Multiple ticket packages are available. As a thank you for their service, first responders and military can attend the event for free. The festival is part of the national Food Truck Festivals of America movement.
Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival – October 16 & 17, 2021
If the Newport Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival is not enough to convince you to visit for the weekend, perhaps the draw of two festivals in one weekend can do the trick. This is your chance to be part of the 30th annual festival on Historic Bowen’s Wharf. Admission to the festival is free and Coastal Living Magazine has given it a spot on their “10 Fabulous Fall Festivals on the Coast” list. If you love seafood your only trouble will be deciding what to eat first: lobster rolls or oysters or chowder or stuffies or fish tacos. Have a landlubber in your group? There are delicious treats for them as well. Wash it all down with signature cocktails or a cold beer. The live music never stops so be sure to wear your dancing shoes. Attend the Newport Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival one day, Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival the next day, and leave Newport knowing that you have truly experienced the best food, beer, and music that the city has to offer.
Newport International Polo Series – June through September
Experience the spectacle that is polo as presented by Turkish Airlines. Newport has hosted this traditional sport for more than 130 years. The dress code may be “Newport casual chic” but many people dress up for the event. Walk up concessions are available or bring your own gourmet picnic to enjoy during the match. The Davitt Pavilion Patio Bar is known for mixing unique cocktails as well as serving boutique wine and craft beer. Spectators with lawn seats are encouraged to bring a cooler with beverages, grill for tasty tailgate food, and tent for shade (all within specific guidelines). Polo matches typically last about two hours but many people make a full day out of the event. Gates open four hours before the match allowing everyone to enjoy the day, a picnic, and friends and family. After the match, there is a champagne toast and trophy presentations. Saturday, September 25 will feature the Turkish Airlines Finals and a grand prize drawing for a trip for four people to anywhere in the world.
