Newport Mansions Christmas Events 2018Rhode Island knows how to celebrate the holidays and the coming months are loaded with events. Few are as popular as the annual Newport Mansions Christmas Tour, however, beginning November 17th and running ’til January 1st, 2019.

Rhode Island’s Newport Mansions are always worth a visit. The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House are National Historic Landmarks and icons of America’s Gilded Age. Visiting them is like stepping back not only in time but also to some fabulous world of refined comfort and ease. This fantastic effect is more than doubled once these stunning, historical homes are decked out for the holidays.

The yuletide finery includes thousands of poinsettias, a forest of Christmas trees, sparkling silver, glimmering gold, wreaths, white candled windows, and so much more. All three mansions will be open daily for tours from November 17th, 2018 through January 1st, 2019.

May is Newport Volvo Ocean Race Month!

Newport Volvo Ocean Race 2018The Newport Volvo Ocean Race Village opens May 8th, 2018 – less than a month away! Come experience “the Everest of professional sailing” up close during its only North American stop, right here in Newport, RI!

The Volvo Ocean Race, held once every three years,  is sailing’s toughest team challenge. It’s a 9 month, 45,000 nautical mile regatta that circles the globe. This year’s course is the longest ever, crossing four oceans and visiting six continents. The race kicked off from Alicante, Spain, in October, 2017  and is scheduled to end this June in the Netherlands. (more…)

The 34th Annual Newport Black Ships Festival!

Newport Black Ships Festival 2017Come celebrate the 34th Annual Newport Black Ships Festival of Japanese art and culture! July 13th through the 16th, 2017 in Newport, Rhode Island!

Newport’s Black Ships Festival is an annual celebration of the long and friendly trading partnership between the United States and Japan. The festival is named in reference to the Japanese word for foreign ships, “Kurofune,” which translates to “Black Ships” in English.

The event commemorates the historic Treaty of Kanagawa, negotiated by Commodore Matthew Perry, that opened trade with Japan in 1854. Black Ships is also a celebration of the friendly relationship between Newport and her Japanese Sister City, Shimoda.

The annual Black Ships Festival has been a Newport tradition since 1983. The popular, multi-day celebration offers a variety of fun and fascinating events emphasizing Japanese art and culture. Highlights include a formal Gala at Rosecliff, sake tastings, martial arts and craft demonstrations, and the always exhilarating Taiko Drums. (more…)

A two-plus hour affair, this year’s parade will include pipe bands, fife and drum corps, clowns, floats, and so much more. The parade is scheduled to kick off at 11 am sharp at the Newport City Hall.
