Newport is well known for its collection of Gilded Age mansions. These lush “summer cottages” that overlook the sea were built around the beginning of the 20th century by some of the country’s wealthiest families.
The Breakers is the grandest and most famous Gilded Age mansion in Newport. Cornelius Vanderbilt II had it constructed in 1893. The mansion’s stunning architecture was inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin.
