The International Tennis Hall of Fame was established in 1954 by Jimmy Van Alen, an American tennis official. His goal had two parts. The first was to preserves and promote the history of tennis and celebrate its champions.

The other goal was to save the historic, 1880 Newport Casino, which has also played a role in U.S. tennis history. In 1881 the Newport Casino served as the birthplace of American tournament tennis.

Thanks to Jimmy Van Alen, this elegant example of Victorian Shingle-Style architecture is still with us. One could not ask for a better place to spend the afternoon. (more…)

Newport’s 23rd annual WINEterfest Weekend is just weeks away, so now is the time to grab your tickets before they sell out! This is especially true of the WINEterfest Speakeasy Soiree, scheduled for the evening of Friday, February 15th.

Newport County, RI is a hotbed of activity in February with both Valentine’s Day and the cornucopia of events that is Newport Winter Festival.

WINEterfest has been a part of every Newport Winter Festival since 1996! The event is hosted by Newport Vineyards, which is a family-run winery located in Middletown, RI. Attending is a great way to celebrate President’s or Valentine’s Day weekend (which all depends on your perspective).

WINEterfest Speakeasy Soiree

Kick off the weekend and Newport Winter Festival on Friday, February 15th, from 7pm to 10pm at the Speakeasy Soiree!

The Speakeasy Soiree is a prohibition-style cocktail event with limited seating and lots of room for dancing. 1920’s, prohibition-era attire and flare are encouraged. Live music will be provided by Miss Katie Kleyla and a Speakeasy Jazz Band.

Newport WINEterfest 2019

Saturday, February 16th and Sunday, February 17th, noon to 5pm, both days.

WINEterfest Weekend offers a chance to taste fine Newport wines by the glass at the famous Ice Wine Bar. You’ll also be able to sample craft beers via Taproot Brewing. Newport Vineyards’ culinary team will serve up delicious, scratch-made, paired nibbles to balance out the libations.

This year’s festival sees two great bands. Saturday will see The Teledynes take the stage from noon to 4pm with their own brand of energetic surf rock and rockabilly. Sunday brings the Little Compton Band back to the WINEterfest stage (12pm-4pm) for more of their infectious roots-rock covers and originals.

WINEterfest Grape Stomping Competitions

Saturday & Sunday, Feb 17 & 18, 1pm to 3pm

It wouldn’t be WINEterfest without the Grape Stomping Competition and both days of WINEterfest include this fun and popular event!

Come watch – or even join in the fun – as we juice wine grapes the old fashioned way: with our bare feet! Hopeful contestants for the annual should come appropriately dressed and will be randomly chosen each day, 1pm to 3pm.

Rhode Island’s Newport Mansions are always worth a visit. The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House are National Historic Landmarks and icons of America’s Gilded Age. Visiting them is like stepping back not only in time but also to some fabulous world of refined comfort and ease. The National Museum of American Illustration Will Draw You In

If you’re a fan of Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, or others like them you owe it to yourself to visit.

The National Museum of American Illustration (NMAI) is the first national museum dedicated exclusively to American illustration. Illustration is art created expressly for reproduction in books, magazines, other media, and advertisements.

This is by no means a denigration of the skill, talent, vision, or work of the artists involved in illustration. Not by any means! In fact, illustration is widely considered to be the most American of American art forms.

The National Museum of American Illustration was founded in 1998. It is located at Vernon Court, in a stately mansion loosely based on the 18th-century French mansion, Château d’Haroué. The combination of so many “Golden Age” illustrations in this “Gilded Age” architectural masterpiece makes for a truly unique and beautiful experience. (more…)

The Newport Music Festival 50th Anniversary Season

Newport Music Festival 2018The Newport Music Festival is celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season this year with 42 concerts and events. The festival includes acclaimed international artists, Grammy winners and nominees, and much more – July 4th through July 22nd, 2018.

Newport Music Festival has been presenting both world-renowned and emerging classical music artists on an annual basis since 1969. Over the years, the festival has hosted more than 2,500 concerts and 130 artists have made their American debuts. It truly is a remarkable and important, annual event.

The Volvo Ocean Race, held once every three years,  is sailing’s toughest team challenge. It’s a 9 month, 45,000 nautical mile regatta that circles the globe. This year’s course is the longest ever, crossing four oceans and visiting six continents.
