There’s nothing quite as invigorating as a quick dip in eye-openingly cold water and the Newport Polar Bear Plunge promises just that.
A Rhode Island tradition, the Newport Polar Bear Plunge has been taking place since 1969. If it looks and sounds like a crazy thing to do, that’s fine. It may be – but it is also a lot of fun. Further, it benefits A Wish Come True, a group that grants the wishes for children ages 3 through 18 with life-threatening illnesses.
Every New Years day, around 11am, revelers collect at Newport’s Easton’s Beach to start off the year with a dip in the ocean!
Easton Beach, more commonly referred to as 1st Beach by locals, is one of Rhode Island’s best beaches. There’s always something happening here, so it seemed the perfect fit for the Newport Polar Bear Plunge. Easton’s Beach is located on Memorial Boulevard, at the beginning of the Newport Cliff Walk, next to Middletown, Rhode Island.
Lots of folks who come to participate in the Plunge don crazy costumes for the event. The crowds are accompanied by local news crews waiting to shoot a segment for television. This may explain some of the costumery – it’s also a warning to not do anything you don’t want on national television!
After charging into the frigid surf for the Plunge, revelers are invited to the Atlantic Beach Club for the annual Newport Polar Bear Plunge After Party, just next door.
Don’t miss it!
