2016 Newport Waterfront Oyster FestivalThe first annual Newport Waterfront Oyster Festival, scheduled for May 21st and 22nd, 2016, is a great opportunity to sample oysters from some of Rhode Island’s many oyster farms!

Many folks don’t realize it but Rhode Island is home to nearly 50 oyster farms, with each one producing its own, signature oyster. The Newport Waterfront Oyster Festival is your opportunity to sample many of these varieties – and all in one sitting!

An inaugural event, the 2016 Newport Waterfront Oyster Festival’s primary goal is to bring the best of Rhode Island’s oyster growers together with a select group of local restaurants at historic Bowen’s Wharf, home of the 25 year-old, annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival.

During the Newport Waterfront Oyster Festival, you’ll have the opportunity to learn insider information on oyster conservation and the oyster industry, as well as meet the growers themselves. Live music and contests – oyster shucking, cooking, eating – will keep you entertained.

You’ll learn why oyster beds are an important part of healthy seas, providing important, nursery habitats for other sea creatures, act as natural water filters, and protect against shoreline erosion.

Watch teams of expert oyster shuckers disrobe thousands of delectable oysters, then – best of all – you’ll get the chance to TASTE the oysters! Sample raw oysters, steamed oysters, roasted oysters, oysters Rockefeller, fried oysters, stewed oysters, oysters on the half shell, and, much more, as prepared by some of the best local and regional chefs Rhode Island has to offer! Beverages, various dipping sauces, and sides will also be available. YUM!

Bowen’s Wharf is also home to numerous, unique shops and galleries that will be hosting their own, special oyster exhibits, talks, tastings, and sales of oyster accessories for both the novice and the expert.

So come on out and slurp a wide variety of Rhode Island oysters, meet the growers, and feel good about it because your attendance helps maintain a healthy aquaculture and local environment!
