Beavertail Lighthouse, in Jamestown, RI is the third oldest lighthouse in the United States. Come see the panoramic views of Narragansett Bay from Jamestown’s most visited landmark!

Beavertail Lighthouse was built in 1856, making it the third oldest lighthouse in the U.S.. Only Boston Light on Little Brewster Island (1716) and Brant Point Light on Nantucket Island (1746) are older. Beavertail Lighthouse remains Rhode Island’s premier lighthouse, marking the entrance to Narragansett Bay.

Located on the southernmost tip of Jamestown, Rhode Island, Beavertail Lighthouse stands where numerous pitchfires and other beacons have been placed as far back as 1705. The tower for the current light was initially 58 feet high and constructed of wood with an 11-foot lantern on top.

The original tower burnt down in 1753, was rebuilt, then was burned again in 1779 by British soldiers retreating from Newport. They also took the lighting equipment and the point stayed dark until 1783. The current structure, made of granite and 64 feet high, was built in 1856.

In 1898 an assistant keeper’s house was added. This building was restored in the early 80’s and opened in 1989 as Beavertail Lighthouse Museum. The museum displays a collection of lighthouse artifacts and exhibits that will enthrall any history or lighthouse buff. Be sure to visit the gift shop, as well.

Beyond the museum and lighthouse, visitors to Beavertail State Park will enjoy some of the most beautiful vistas to be found along the New England coastline. People travel from around the world to take in the pristine environment and panoramic views of Narragansett Bay. The park features four stunning overlooks and a number of hiking trails. The area also provides a naturalist program and some of the best saltwater fishing in the area.
